The beating heart of Country Kids is undoubtedly our petting farm. Even in winter, my role as Farmer Syl doesn’t change.
My mornings start with feeding and caring for our beloved animals, ensuring they remain happy and healthy. Apache, our much-loved horse, is always a winter highlight. Whether he’s nudging me for extra treats or galloping through the frosty paddocks, Apache’s antics bring life to the farm.
However, winter comes with its challenges. For example, we’ve experienced problems with predators for several years, and now is the time we must act. Protecting our chickens from crafty foxes and ravenous falcons has been a top priority this season. To keep them safe, we’ve been building a fortified outdoor area, complete with reinforced fencing and clever design features. This ensures the hens can roam freely without worry.

Tending to the grounds – winter in the gardens
Winter doesn’t mean downtime for our gardens and grounds – all 30 acres of them. Nature might seem to be at rest, but this is when the real groundwork begins. Clearing leaves, pruning, and gathering chestnuts and acorns are just some of the tasks that keep us busy. All of this often back-breaking work helps to ensure the gardens are pristine and bursting with life when summer arrives, creating a stunning backdrop for your French holidays.
We’re also committed to sustainability. By composting organic debris and creating wildlife-friendly habitats, we ensure our gardens aren’t just beautiful but also environmentally responsible. Building maintenance – keeping Country Kids picture-perfect
As you can imagine, there is always some essential building maintenance required at a resort like Country Kids, and when we have no guests is the time to tackle those perennial projects.
This year, one of our key projects has been re-waterproofing the entrance fountain, ensuring it sparkles as it welcomes families arriving for their French holidays in 2025.
Roof tiling on the office and Farm House terrace has also been a focus. Such work ensures our accommodation and facilities remain cosy, safe, and weatherproof, ready for any summer showers that might pass through.
